Our story
In 2011, David Anderson, discovered ‘Updraft’. A free backup plugin initially released in 2010 by Paul Kehrer. Impressed with its ease of use and ability to restore files, David started using the plugin, making tweaks and improvements to its code over time.
“Hi, I’ve written a patch that encrypts backups – useful for shared storage. Please can you contact me? I’m interested in taking over maintenance of this plugin. I have various improvements I’d like to make.”
Paul responded positively.
“A patch like this sounds pretty fantastic and I’d love for someone with more time / energy to take over Updraft if you’re still interested.”
And so it began.
‘UpdraftPlus’ version 0.1 was released in August 2011.
When users started saying ‘I’d pay for a version with this-or-that in it’, David developed paid add-ons, and UpdraftPlus became a commercial enterprise.
Officially registered in January 2013, UpdraftPlus launched its first website soon after.
The dawn of TeamUpdraft
Over the years, UpdraftPlus grew to an install base of more than 3 million WordPress websites and other WordPress plugins were acquired…
2018 – 2022
WP-Optimize joined our portfolio in 2018, followed by All-In-One Security in 2022. Both plugins received significant investment, leading to regular releases of both the free and premium versions.
2023 – 2024
The senior leadership team agreed it was time to create a parent brand to unite the plugin suite, which had previously operated as separate brands with disconnected websites.
2025
TeamUpdraft was born. This change coincided with the expansion of the senior leadership team and a renewed, future-focused commitment to supporting the WordPress community for years to come.
