Premium feature

WordPress multisite compatible

When UpdraftPlus Premium you can install UpdraftPlus even on a WordPress multisite network, restrict access to the Network Administrator, restore subsites and more.

  • What is the WordPress multisite backup feature?

When you install UpdraftPlus Premium on a WordPress multisite, UpdraftPlus is lifted to the network administrator level.

Mu-plugins can be backed up and restored separately from other plugins, themes and uploads.

For older version of WordPress multisite where blog data is stored in its own blogs.dir folder structure, UpdraftPlus will store this in its own archive as well.

  • What can I do with the WordPress multisite feature?

You can backup and restore sub-sites instead of the entire WordPress multisite network.

You can also migrate a single site into a WordPress multisite network and you can migrate a subsite into another multisite network.

However these are considered permanent beta features. We can’t guarantee results because of the nature and complexity of how multisites are configured.

You can’t currently clone a sub-site within the same multisite network or export a sub-site to a standalone WordPress site.

What are the benefits of the ‘WordPress Multisite backup’ feature?

Restrict access to the network administrator

Although the free version of UpdraftPlus can be used on a WordPress multisite network, it isn’t recommended. This is because UpdraftPlus would become accessible to all sub-site admins without any separation or restrictions, allowing unregulated access to the entire network database and file structure.

The multisite feature of UpdraftPlus Premium addresses this issue by restricting access to the UpdraftPlus dashboard exclusively to network administrators.

Only trusted network admins can access the dashboard, ensuring better security and management of the network.

Restore only sub-sites instead of the entire network

With UpdraftPlus Premium, you can back up the entire WordPress multisite network but restore individual sub-sites.  Sub-sites can be restored separately without affecting the multisite network.

Selectively back up and restore the blogs.dir directory and mu-plugins

Mu-plugins (must-use) plugins are more likely to be used by network administrators and thus UpdraftPlus Premium allows you to back these up and restore them separately.

This is different to the free version where mu-plugins would be backed up and restored alongside ‘other files’ and can not be separated out.

If managing an older version of WordPress multisite where blog data is stored in its own blogs.dir folder structure, UpdraftPlus Premium allows you to back up and restore this as its own directory.

Migrate a single site into a WordPress multisite network or migrate a subsite into another multisite network

Note both of these scenarios are considered permanent beta features. We can’t guarantee results because of the nature and complexity of how multisites are configured.

I’ve never had to look at another website backup plugin after having come across Updraft. It has everything you’d need: easy backups to different types of backup options like GDrive, FTP servers, Dropbox, local, etc. What’s more important is the excellence with which it restores. This is usually a challenging part for website backup plugins but Updraft does it seamlessly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I restore a single sub-site on a WordPress multisite network?

To restore a single sub-site on a WordPress multisite, use UpdraftPlus Premium. Simply click to restore your backup (as you would with a single site setup in UpdraftPlus). A restoration wizard then gives you the option to choose a specific site to restore.

What does the WordPress multisite network feature do?

The UpdraftPlus multisite network feature lifts access to UpdraftPlus to the network administrator and allows sub-sites to be restored separately.  It also enables separate backup and restoration of blogs.fir and mu (must-use) plugins.

Can I choose separate back up settings for the sub-sites of my WordPress multisite network?

Not currently. Choose (at the network level) how often to back up, where to back up, how many backups to retain etc. Back up everything but restore separately.
